Back to School Inspiration
Hello, Smiling Faces!
Summer is over and school is back in session! Due to the pandemic centered around COVID-19, many didn’t get the full experience of summer days. Beach vacations, holiday experiences, concerts and festivals were either limited or cancelled. These times are challenging and scary. I hear countless stories of those trying to survive the pandemic and unemployment as a whole. Racial injustice is high and I am simply just tired. I keep pressing forward in my purpose, hoping and praying for change. My prayers and thoughts are with you. Many schools recently opened and currently experiencing COVID-19 cases. School sports are postponed and school closures are being announced daily. Virtual learning in my school district starts this Monday. My 10th Grader is feeling all the mixed emotions.
As parents, we have to ensure we have our child's best interest at heart. Most importantly, our participation and ability to listen and recognize their needs are important. These challenging times can be overwhelming to everyone involved. It's important to have a routine that works for the family. Always attempt to avoid the chaos.
Below are a few tips to engage you and your child, towards a successful school year:
1. Plan ahead. Prepare each day ahead to engage in your child's school work, homework, and activities. Make it clear that education is a top priority in your family. Nothing is more important than eliminating the chaos.
2. Proper rest. Rest is essential for a productive and healthy school year. Ensure that your child is on a routine to ensure adequate rest.
3. Communication. Communicate with teachers and administrators. Contact your child's teacher at the start of the new school year. Get acquainted with them and engage in your child's learning. Plan to keep track of your child's progress, subjects, homework and activities.
4. Volunteer. With remote/virtual learning, volunteer assistance may be limited, but you can actively volunteer your time to assist your child. Remember, this new way of learning is impacting all in some form or fashion.
5. Celebrate your child's achievements. Be mindful of barriers your child has overcome. Challenge your child to try new ways of learning and thinking. Every child learn at a different pace and should be congratulated on their efforts.
Always encourage your child to be open and honest with you at all times. Notice the signs that may be questionable; such as depression, anxiety or fatigue. Cyber Bullying is occurring more and more in rapid forms and is a huge concern. There are many programs and steps to take if you suspect your child is a victim of bullying.
As you prepare for the school year ahead, make sure you encounter some excitement and inspiration while supporting your child in the success of their future. Maintain a positive attitude and have a prosperous school year!
Always SMILE...
